Bandana Bag

An awesome project to upcycle a bandana and jeans legs

Bandana purse DIY

Make your own very simple but stylish cross-body bag with bandana! In this sewing tutorial you will learn how to make this slouchy summer bag. The use of a bandana scarf and a shoulder strap with tassels and beads gives this bag a trendy bohemian / gypsy character.

This tutorial and pattern are very simple and even a beginner can sew this slouchy bag. Hard to believe this, because the purse looks very trendy and I am sure you will get a lot of compliments!

How to make a purse with bandana

You can make this bag with almost any thick but soft fabric, but denim is often cheap or free and matches bandana in style. And using old jeans helps our Mother Nature in a very big way!

A good sewing project for denim lovers and eco thinkers.

Size of the finished bag when filled and draped:
Width 13″-14” (33-36cm)
Height 7″-8” (18-20cm) from the lowest in the middle to the very bottom.
The shoulder strap is adjustable.

DIY slouchy bandana bag

To make this bag you will need:
Bandana. This bag was designed for a bandana size 22”x22” (55x55cm). This is one of standard sizes of bandana on market, but it shrinks after a wash! Always pre-wash your bandana if bought new, but of course you can also use an old bandana which you no longer wear. Measure it’s side. If after washing and ironing it’s anything between 20”and 22” (51-55cm) then it will work here!
Fabric for the outer – two jeans legs 8″ wide will be just right.
Fabric for lining (thin cotton is my recommendation).
Magnet clasp.
Small zipper for inner pocket is optional.

Shoulder strap. There are a few options for making a shoulder strap for this bag.
You can buy a thin braided belt, you can make a simple braid yourself from different strands or you can use a cotton cord. If you feel like you need more tassels, you can make or buy a bag charm on a carabiner and clip onto the tab later.

Cross-body bag shoulder strap options to make

About the length. It’s difficult to say exactly because you will adjust the strap for your comfort and body size. For reference only, minimum length to be able to tie it and wear cross-body is about 50” (130cm). And maximum length of strings for braiding and having tassels hang low — 70” (180cm). I recommend to start with a longer strap (if available) and trim to size later.
