Hair scrunchie can be made with denim too!
Have you ever thought that a hair scrunchie can be made with denim? Stylish idea but you probably thought that denim is too thick and tough for a hair scrunchie. Yes, most of denim fabric is way too heavy for it, but nowadays there are some very thin jeans on market, those skinny-stretchy type.
There is not much you can make with those jeans, but there are two things came into my mind on how to recycle the stretchy jeans. One is the reusable gift bags, which you can see here>>> and the second is – scrunchie. As a “denim-head”, I could not miss the oppotunity to try making it out of jeans and here we go – quite cool and soft hair accessorie!
Denim hair scrunchie is super easy to make and there are tons of free tutorials about it on the Web. However, here is one from me too π Everybody makes them their own way, as they are comfortable with, and quite possibly you will learn something new with my free tutorial of DIY denim hair scrunchie.
Cut out a simple rectangle
Cut a long rectangle from the chosen jeans. The sizes are advised anything between 20″ and 26″ for the length and 3,5″ – 5″ for the width. Sometimes the jeans will dictate the size of the strip. Just for reference, here are two scrunchies on the picture below. The larger one was sewn from a rectangle 25″x5″ and the smaller one – 23″x4″.
Size of the elastic. You will find on internet different sizes, usually 8″ to 9″. But elastics have different stretching possibilities. For denim scrunchie is is best to take rather soft elastic and about 8″. In any case, it’s better to have it longer at first and adjust later.
How to make
First, iron the ends. I do this so that in the very end it will be easier to finish off the opening. Wait and see π
Fold it in half lengthwise and stitch along with 1 cm seam allowance, securing the thread at each end.
Turn to the right side.
This is how the ironed ends will look like:
Now attach the elastic to one end of the denim tube with a safety pin, this will stop the elastic falling into the tube. Put another pin to another end of elastic – this will help you to feed the elastic all the way through the tube easily. The bigger the pin – the better.
Feed the elastic through the tube and pull out both ends of elastic to be able to join them. Now you can approximately judge what length is good for your scrunchie. Overlap the elastic ends, pin and stitch. Or you can tie a knot here.
Pretty much ready :)) Now join the two openings at a right position, making sure the fabric on the scrunchie is not twisted.
Stitch together the openings with a ladder stitch. Now you will see why I ironed the ends as a first step π It is much easier to handle and get it right.
Well done! Your denim scrunchie is great!
I hope you have enjoyed this easy tutorial and are excited to make those fashion accessories as handmade gifts for all your friends π

Thank you for this. Is there a way to print out the directions?
Hello, Julie! There is no possibility to print this page. May I ask why you need it?
Thank you for making the instructions so easy to follow! I have about 6 pair of old jeans that I need to do something with, so I am excited to try some of these projects! I know just enough about sewing to be dangerous (LOL) so the thorough instructions are truly helpful! Thank you!
Hi, Sondra! Thank you for your comment! I am glad it comes useful! Have fun! Don’t forget that for a scrunchie it’s better to use very thin jeans.
